outdoor led basketball court lighting design

Guided by the principles of outdoor led basketball court lighting and the research findings of this paper, a specific design plan is proposed, using an outdoor basketball court as a case study.

To begin with, suitable lighting fixtures should be selected based on various measured and calculated indices. In line with the outdoor led basketball court lighting concept aimed at energy conservation and emission reduction, it is recommended to use LED floodlights as a replacement for traditional metal halide lamps. The LED lamps will have a power rating of 160W, constructed from high-purity die-cast aluminum with a 5mm tempered glass cover, and will utilize American BridgeLux chips. The dimensions of the lamps are L450*W315*H225. featuring two integrated 80W lamp beads. The lighting specifications include: AC85~265V; a power factor exceeding 9.5; a color temperature range of 2700-6500K; and a luminous flux of 10800-11400LM. Under normal conditions, the lifespan is expected to exceed 50.000 hours. Considering the relationship between illuminance and distance, the height of the lamp posts is set at 6 meters, using hot-galvanized posts. To ensure stability and minimize material waste, a variable diameter design is implemented, with a lower diameter of 140mm and an upper diameter of 70mm, both with a thickness of 3mm. According to the illuminance model, the average illuminance of these lamps is 323.5Lx, and in the competition area where the lamps are closely arranged, the illuminance from a single light source exceeds 400lx, fully meeting the lighting requirements for a basketball court (150-750lx).

Next, the placement and number of light sources should be determined based on the site conditions. Given the area and lighting standards for basketball courts, the plan includes four sets of 2*160W LED floodlights, which can effectively replace traditional 400W metal halide lamps, achieving the necessary illuminance for both competition and recreational use. The layout is illustrated in Fig.3. tailored to the site characteristics.

As depicted in the figure, in accordance with the outdoor led basketball court lighting criteria JGJ153-2007. the four sets of 160W LED floodlights are symmetrically positioned on both sides of the court. The specific locations are detailed in the figure. This arrangement primarily illuminates the basketball stand area to meet the lighting needs of the offensive zone, fulfilling the requirements for general competitions, training, and recreational activities.

In comparison to traditional outdoor led basketball court lighting schemes, the eco-friendliness of this design is primarily evident in the choice of lamps. LED lamps are energy-efficient and offer superior performance parameters compared to metal halide lamps. Under identical site conditions, the lighting effect of 160W LED lamps is equivalent to that of 400W metal halide lamps. A comparison of the basic parameters is provided in Table 3.

According to the table, LED lamps are not only environmentally friendly and energy-efficient, but they also outperform metal halide lamps in terms of lighting quality. They have a longer lifespan, with metal halide lamps typically guaranteed for about one year, while LED lamps have a guarantee of around three years. Additionally, the self-loss power of LED lamps is only 0.1 times that of metal halide lamps, significantly lowering energy consumption. These features are crucial for green lighting solutions. Overall, the green aspect is primarily demonstrated through low energy usage, reduced electricity costs, and minimal maintenance expenses. For example, if a site uses electricity for 5 hours daily, with an electricity rate of 0.5 Yuan per kWh and 365 days in a year, the annual electricity cost for four sets of double-head 160W LED floodlights would be 0.17 × 5 × 0.5 × 365 × 8 = 1241 Yuan.

In comparison, the annual electricity cost for 400 metal halide lamps under the same lighting conditions would be 0.485 × 5 × 0.5 × 365 × 8 = 3540.5 Yuan. This means LED lamps would save 2299.5 Yuan, achieving a power savings of 64.95%. Regarding maintenance costs, metal halide lamps have an average lifespan of one year, with electrical maintenance needed every two and a half years. Currently, the cost of a 400W lamp source is 100 Yuan, and the cost of electrical appliances is 150 Yuan. Therefore, the maintenance cost for 400W metal halide lamps over three years totals 16200 Yuan, while the maintenance cost for 160W LED floodlights is zero over the same period. Thus, LED lamps are the optimal choice for outdoor led basketball court lighting design.
